Every year, thousands of people will be diagnosed with cancer in our region; more than 75 per cent of them will require some form of surgical procedure at The Ottawa Hospital. Rapid diagnosis

The Ottawa Hospital’s new Assessment Centre for Lung, Colorectal, Prostate and Breast Cancer will provide “one stop” care for patients and their families by bringing diagnosis, treatments and support services under one roof. The hope is that the new centre will reduce diagnosis times from four months to four weeks.

Leading-edge treatment

In the Hospital’s new Critical Care Wing, some of Canada’s best surgeons will soon perform leading-edge procedures such as minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Standard surgery for conditions like colon cancer involves a large abdominal incision; 11 to 13 days in hospital, significant amounts of painkillers and an additional six to 10 weeks’ recovery at home. In contrast, MIS means much smaller incisions, about five days in the hospital, significantly reduced pain and an average of four weeks’ recovery at home.
